Into the Sacred Flame
Tanukidanisan Fudo-in is a mountain temple deeply connected to the traditions of Shugendo and devoted to Fudo Myoo, whose sacred image is enshrined within a natural cave on the mountainside.
In this experience, practitioners welcome you at the foot of the mountain and guide you along the forest path, sharing the meaning of the statues, deities, and mountain symbolism encountered along the way. The ascent itself becomes part of the experience, inviting you to slow your pace and enter the atmosphere of the mountain.
After ascending to the temple grounds, you are led into the inner sanctum surrounding the goma altar — an area normally closed to the public — where a private fire ritual is performed before Fudo Myoo.
During the ceremony, prayers are offered for happiness, protection, and well-being through the dedication of a sacred flame. At the climax of the ritual, you are invited to place a wooden gomagi prayer stick into the fire yourself.

Private Goma Fire Ritual at Tanukidanisan Fudoin
55,000 JPY / personEnter the normally private main hall of Tanukidanisan Fudoin for a personal introduction to Shugendo, Fudo Myoo, and the Buddhist goma fire ritual. Before the ceremony, write a prayer or wish on a wooden gomagi tablet.
A trained monk performs the ritual before Tanukidani Fudo Myoo, and you will place your own gomagi directly into the sacred fire under his guidance. Each participant receives one goma-fuda talisman associated with the ceremony’s prayers and blessings. English interpretation is included. The separate monk-initiation ritual is not included in this plan.
