Create a dinner plate and bowl beside a traditional wood-fired kiln in the forests of Kameoka, Kyoto. After learning how yakishime pottery gains its natural colors and textures from flame and ash rather than glaze, choose from white, black, or sakura clay and shape the two pieces with ceramic artist Emu Nakai.

The artist will create matching pieces in the same forms, completing a table set that brings your work and hers together. Your pieces will be fired in the next kiln firing and shipped approximately three to six months later.

Process

  • Discover Yakishime

    Tour the kiln and learn how flame and natural ash create the surface of yakishime pottery.

  • Choose Your Clay

    Select white, black, or sakura clay for your tableware.

  • Create a Plate and Bowl

    Shape a 20 cm dinner plate and a bowl together with the artist.

  • Complete the Table Set

    The artist creates matching pieces, and the finished set is fired and shipped later.
