About the destination

On this tour, we will visit OKA, a woodworking workshop located at the foot of a mountain along a pleasant country road lined with fields in Asahi-cho, the northern tip of Kameoka City. craftspeople who have studied at a joinery workshop and are familiar with the properties of wood know how to make the most of the basic wood.``In order to make furniture, we need trees that are over 100 years old.If we don't make something that can be used for at least as many years as the tree has lived, we feel sorry for the tree.'' says the craftsperson. Experience the depth of woodworking while listening to the craftspeople's ideas.

Producing simple and durable wooden furniture

Mr. Oka, who has a warm and gentle atmosphere, is originally from Kyoto. He studied economics at university and got a job at a kimono wholesaler. He has loved making things since he was a student, but when he started working, he never thought he would become a craftsperson. Because of my job, I often meet craftspeople, and when I started to get interested in the world of craftspeople, I came across a book about wood. Impressed by the book, she decided she wanted to become a woodworker and enrolled at Agematsu Technical School in Nagano Prefecture. After that, he trained for three years under Mr. Kintaro Yazawa, a furniture craftsperson using lacquerware in Miyazaki. After completing my training, I was looking for a place to start my own business, and I had a connection with Kameoka and decided to move there.

He says

“Wood is familiar part of our lives, but do you oftern have chance to touch it closely? We would like you to touch it and feel it through this experience.

And we hope that the experience will be an opportunity for you to bring wood into your own lives.”
